The rarest flame: we computed every one of the 1,966,080 Flame Test paths
People who take the Flame Test often ask the same thing afterwards: is my flame rare? Instead of guessing, we ran the exact algorithm behind the test on every combination of answers that can decide your flame. Here is the full ranking, what makes a flame rare, and what rarity does and does not mean.

Short answer: the Twin and the Wildfire are the rarest flames, each reached by 1.31% of all possible answer paths. The most common is the Guardian at 6.55%, followed by the Crown at 6.44%. With 27 flames, a perfectly even split would give each one about 3.7%.
How we measured it
Your flame is not picked at random from a list. It is the result of a small, deterministic algorithm, the same one that runs inside the Shine app, ported line by line to this website. Two of your answers decide the territory your flame can be born in: how people experience you when they first meet you (six possible answers) and how many conversations you keep going at once (five possible answers). That gives 30 territories. Each one holds either a single archetype or two candidates.
When a territory holds two archetypes, eight later answers decide between them: your social energy, how you make the first move, your humor, how you show affection, your weekends, your inner compass, how you see the world and what you are looking for. Each of those has four options. In the rare case where both archetypes score exactly the same, a random seed created when you start the test breaks the tie.
- We enumerated every combination of the ten deciding answers: 6 × 5 × 4⁸ = 1,966,080 paths.
- For each path we ran the real scoring function and recorded which archetype wins.
- Exact ties were split evenly between the tied archetypes, because the random seed is uniform.
- We added everything up. No sampling, no rounding until the very end.
One honest caveat before the results: this measures how rare a flame is by design, across all the answer paths the test allows. It is not a census of Shine users. Real people do not pick answers at random, so in practice some flames will show up more often than others. What this ranking tells you is how narrow the road to each flame is.

Three things stand out. First, the eight rarest flames are all single-path flames that share their only territory with another archetype, so they have to win a tie-break against a neighbor. Second, flames at exactly 3.33% own one territory outright (one in 30), and many others land near 5%, typically one territory of their own plus about half of a shared one. Third, the most common flames, the Guardian and the Crown, are the only ones that can be born in three different territories.
Why the Twin and the Wildfire are so rare
Both rarest flames come from the same first answer: “Soft at first, intense after.” That is the temperament with the most competition, because its five territories are shared by eight different archetypes.
- The Twin lives only where “soft at first, intense after” meets “one, plus one lingering”. It shares that single territory with the Serpent, and the Serpent wins more of the tie-breaks.
- The Wildfire lives only where the same temperament meets “I honestly lost count”. It shares it with the Spiral, and again it wins the smaller half.
In other words, to become a Twin you need one specific combination of first answers, and then the rest of your answers have to lean toward an all-in, echo-seeking way of loving rather than the Serpent’s elusive one. That is a narrow road, which is exactly what rarity means here.
Why the Guardian and the Crown are the most common
The Guardian can be born in three territories: “I’m the same start to finish” paired with “one, plus one lingering” (a territory it owns alone) or with “I honestly lost count”, and “people around but one direction” paired with “one, plus one lingering”. The Crown also has three. More doors means more paths, so these two flames collect the most answer combinations. Common does not mean ordinary: it means many different ways of answering lead to a steady, protective or charismatic way of loving.
The six families, by share of paths
| Family | Share of all paths | What it says |
|---|---|---|
| Secret | 21.50% | The largest family: five flames, most of them reachable from two or three territories. |
| Vivid | 19.99% | Five flames that mostly own their territories outright, with no tie-break to lose. |
| Steady | 19.67% | Includes the two most common flames, the Guardian and the Crown. |
| Dreamers | 15.09% | Four flames, including the Butterfly, one of the rarest. |
| Free | 14.34% | Home of the Twin and the Wildfire, the two rarest flames. |
| Winding | 9.40% | The rarest family overall: three of its four flames have a single, shared path. |

The 16 types and their most likely flames
The Flame Test also gives you a four-letter type, computed from the same answers. Your type and your flame are related but not locked together: your type summarizes broad tendencies, while your flame depends heavily on those two territory questions. To see how they connect, we ran one million simulated test takers with uniformly random answers through the real code and recorded, for each type, the three flames it most often leads to.
The pattern is clear: no type is tied to a single flame. Even the strongest pairings stay under 10%, which is why two people with the same type can carry very different flames. If you want to read about how types play out in dating, our guide to the 16 types in dating goes deeper.
Does a rare flame mean anything for compatibility?
No, and this matters. Rarity describes how many answer paths lead to a flame, not how lovable, compatible or special that way of loving is. In Shine, compatibility is measured by the Soul Match score, which compares how two people answered, not how rare their flames are. Two common flames can be a Blaze-level match; two rare ones can be an Ember. Rarity is a fun fact about the map, not a ranking of people.
It does have one practical consequence: if you carry a rare flame, you will meet fewer people who share it. That is not a problem, because most strong matches happen between complementary flames rather than identical ones. Our guide to compatibility explains what actually predicts two people getting along.
What this study does not tell you
- It is not real-world frequency. Real answers cluster: many people describe themselves in similar ways, so the real distribution among Shine users will differ.
- It does not rank flames. No flame is better than another; they describe different ways of loving.
- It is not a personality test result. The Flame Test is a playful portrait inspired by personality typology, not a psychological assessment.
- Your flame can change. Answer differently later in life and you may walk a different path.
Find your own flame
The test takes about three minutes, needs no account and gives you your flame, your type and a link to share. If you end up with a Twin or a Wildfire, you now know you walked one of the narrowest roads on the map. And if you want to see how your flame lights up next to someone else’s, that is what Shine is built for. You can also read why we chose a flame instead of photos to start a conversation.
Frequently asked questions
What is the rarest flame in the Shine Flame Test?
The Twin and the Wildfire are tied as the rarest, each reached by 1.31% of all 1,966,080 possible answer paths.
What is the most common flame?
The Guardian, at 6.55% of answer paths, just ahead of the Crown at 6.44%. Both can be born in three different territories.
How was flame rarity calculated?
We ran the exact algorithm used by the test and the Shine app on every combination of the ten answers that decide the flame, splitting exact ties evenly.
Is this how many Shine users have each flame?
No. It measures rarity by design across all possible answers. Real people do not answer at random, so real-world frequencies differ.
Does a rare flame mean better compatibility?
No. Compatibility comes from the Soul Match score, which compares answers. Rarity only says how narrow the path to a flame is.
Is my flame tied to my 16-type result?
Only loosely. In one million simulated tests, no type led to any single flame more than about 10% of the time.
